Through a narrative that weaves together the history of the web, digital culture, and political reflection, the book traces the transition from a network conceived as an open space for participation to an ecosystem geared toward monetizing attention, polarization, and the production of visibility.
While it is part of a very broad debate today, the book takes on particular significance due to the author’s unique perspective on the subject, as he has personally experienced some of the major transformations in Italian and international digital culture—as editor-in-chief of Wired Italia, a Digital Champion at the EU, and curator of numerous events dedicated to innovation.
This review aims to discuss the book’s contribution within the framework of the contemporary debate on the relationship between technology and democracy, highlighting both its effectiveness in making the subject accessible to a broader audience and some possible oversimplifications in the contrast between the early internet and contemporary platforms.
